Booking at the Real County Jail

The Real County Jail processes bookings around the clock. Intake starts when an officer brings someone in. Staff record the person's name, date of birth, and address. Then fingerprints and a mugshot are taken. Each charge is logged with the time and place of arrest and the arresting officer's name.

Texas law under Code of Criminal Procedure Article 15.17 requires a magistrate hearing within 48 hours of arrest. At that hearing, bail gets set and the person is told about their rights. The magistrate record becomes part of the booking file. Medical screening and a property inventory also happen during intake. The Texas Commission on Jail Standards inspects county jails to make sure they meet health, housing, and safety requirements.

Note: Real County may contract with neighboring counties for jail housing when needed, but booking still happens through the Real County Sheriff's Office.
